Tried & Tested BIOEFFECT

Tried tested men's bioeffect moisturiser serum expert reviewBIOEFFECT is the cult Icelandic skincare brand using biotechnology and Barley EGF - said to have results comparable to botox - cultured in an ecologically-engineered greenhouse in Iceland powered by sustainable geothermal energy. The EGF Serum delivers proven results with only 7 pure ingredients. Other products in the range are the Hydrating Cream and the EGF Essence, a light, hydrating face essence enriched with EFG, a volcanic exfoliator, body serum, face masks and pure Icelandic water to prep the skin for serum and moisturiser.

Left - BIOEFFECT - EGF Serum - 15ml - £129, Volcanic Exfoliator - 60ml - £32, Hydrating Cream - 50ml - £95, EGF Eye Serum - 6ml - £69

TheChicGeek says, “BIOEFFECT was founded by three Icelandic scientists when they discovered, after over a decade of research, a way to produce plant-based EGF - Epidermal Growth Factor - in barley plants. This looks, feels and is premium. I tried and tested the serum, moisturiser, exfoliator and eye serum. Both the serum and moisturiser had a nourishing and mattifying effect on my skin, leaving it feeling healthy, fed and hydrated. The exfoliator had a slightly nutty/almondy fragrance, but I feel it needs slightly more abrasiveness or foaming to feel more exfoliator-like. The eye serum could be easily applied with a soothing steel rollerball.

This range is fairly pricey so you might not want to buy the entire selection. If I was going to choose 2 standouts, it would be the Serum and the Hydrating Cream.”

Book London's Lost Department Stores

London's Lost Department Stores Tessa Boase Book Review

Not long ago, every major high street in Greater London, from Ilford to Uxbridge, had its landmark department store. The West End was full of them – from Debenham & Freebody on Wigmore Street, to Swan & Edgar at Piccadilly Circus. But now the department store is suddenly an endangered species. We've lost an astonishing 83% in the past six years.

London's Lost Department Stores Tessa Boase Book Review DH EvansToday’s consumer has little idea of the sheer dazzle of these ‘Halls of Temptation’ during the golden age of shopping – of their sheer theatrical spectacle, the overwhelming assault on the senses, the astonishing architectural élan.

Right - The escalators at DH Evans - the now closed House of Fraser

London's Lost Department Stores Tessa Boase Book Review Grants CroydonFrom the fabulous Art Deco of Derry & Toms, to the startling Moderne lines of Holdrons of Peckham Rye, department stores led the way in fashion and design. As new social hubs for the independent Victorian woman, they engineered social progress. They became legendary for their publicity stunts, their Christmas shop windows, their exotic pet departments, their furs: as places where you could buy anything – 'from an elephant to a pin'.

Left - Grants Croydon

Bursting with original research and anecdote, illustrated with superb period photographs throughout, this unique store-by-store history brings to life a vanished era of confidence and style. For London-lovers, architecture buffs, history flâneurs, fashionistas, former loyal workers, Are You Being Served obsessives, and anyone who has ever loved riding the escalator up, up, up.

London's Lost Department Stores Tessa Boase Book Review Pratts StreathamTheChicGeek says, "This book is packed full of history and factual nuggets on the once household names of London department stores and the societal changes that they instigated and witnessed. We've grown obsessed with the downfall of the department store recently, but, this book, and its 50 lost stores of London, illustrates how they have been coming and going as long as they have existed.

Takeovers, world wars and recessions have all taken their toll, but, it's surprising how many there were and how many are still left. This book help you recognise many architectural ghosts still looming large on our high streets and even has a walk around Central London to follow. Who knew the toy shop Hamleys on Regent Street was originally a Galeries Lafayette or most shop assistants lived above the stores paying rent to their kings of capitalism owners? This book should be of interest for those into architecture and city/society history as well as retail stories.

Right - John Barnes pioneering electric vehicles. The John Lewis Partnership closed the store & it is now a Waitrose

On a personal level, it's interesting how many big stores Croydon had - Kennards, Grants and Allders. All now sadly gone. It illustrates what a once thriving suburban shopping centre it once was up until relatively recently and how exciting these shops once were. These lost shops mirror the changes and the ups and downs of neighbourhoods and their local clientele. Some made their owners very rich indeed. I can just about remember the end of Pratt's in Streatham before the John Lewis Partnership decided to close it.

Full of images and illustrations, this is a compact book that helps us make sense of the archictecture of our retail thoroughfares and put names and personalities to these fallen retail giants."
